School Wide Programs

Classroom Guidance Lessons

Classroom guidance lessons are a part of teaching life-long skills for students to be successful. These lessons include academic skill learning, career exploration, and social-emotional learning.

Positive Behavior Intervention & Support (PBIS)

  • All students are encouraged to follow our school wide expectations, which are be respectful, be responsible, be safe.

  • Each month, our school will have a PBIS assembly. This is where students will be taught the character trait of the month.

  • Students will earn Meteor Badges from teachers and support staff for meeting the school wide expectations.

  • Students who meet the goal for Meteor Badges by the end of the quarter will participate in a quarterly reward. (Past rewards were glow party dances, ice cream socials, and a cookies & milk party!)

  • Students who do not meet their badge goals will be monitored and may be recommended for additional support.

Small Group Counseling

Some students are identified as needing more support than school wide programming. This additional support is sometimes provided in small group instruction and counseling. Small group services typically run between 6-8 weeks but can last as long as 12.

How do I sign my child up?
Small group letters are sent home to families of students recommended for small group services based on the universal screening or teacher recommendation. Please fill out the permission for small group counseling if you are interested in those services for your child. If you do not receive a invitation to participate in small group counseling but feel your child might benefit from it, please contact the school counselor to determine appropriate services for your child.

What types of small groups do you run?
Small group topics are created with the needs of the students. Some small groups that have been run in the past focus on social skills, emotion regulation, making positive choices, family changes, and skills for success (organization, time management, study skills, etc.). Needs are assessed through teacher recommendation, universal screening, and parent recommendation.

Individual Counseling

Some children need more support than classroom guidance or small group services. These students are often times recommended to participate in individual counseling with their school counselor. Other times, individual sessions may be recommended if content requires more privacy for the student and family. These individual sessions take place on weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly bases depending on the nature and severity of the issue at hand. Please contact your school counselor directly to discuss individual services.

Please note: School counselors do not provide on-going therapy. If your child needs more support than the school counselor is able to provide, a referral for school based social work or outside counseling at a local provider may be made.

Universal Screening

At Montrose Area School District, we use an SEL Screening for students in grade K-6. SEL stands for social emotional learning. We use the SSIS-SEL (The Social Skills Improvement System - Social Emotional Learning Edition). Your child’s teacher will complete this universal screening twice a year.

This screening allows our district to be more preventative when it comes to social-emotional and behavioral skill development of our students. You should look at this screening like that of hearing or vision screening; it will provide insight on your child’s strengths and needs. Understanding the strengths and areas for growth of MASD students provides our school staff with meaningful information to assist students in navigating through their education. If your child is recommended for additional support to help them be successful, you will be notified.
